It's a brutal sport. If early in your career you lose a single fight then it could ruin your career. In Pavlik's case, he won and kept winning. All the while, nobody noticed. A year and half before he won his titles he was washing dishes and mowing lawns to pay the bills. Nobody noticed. Then when he won the title he gained a lot of attention but also a lot of scrutiny.
