Kelly Pavlik hosted guests of golfing foursomes for his 3rd Annual Golf Classic to benefit the Beegly Campus of the Akron Children's hospital. Other Professional Athletes on hand included Heisman Trophy Winner and Cleveland Native Troy Smith of the Baltimore Ravens, Youngstown native Anthony Smith of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Youngstown native Brad Smith of the New York Jets. Later in the evening Kelly attended a charity event organized by Brad Smith to help families develop skills to support their kids' academic endeavors.

Kelly is back home with his wife and two children. On Saturday he lost The Linear World Middleweight Title to Sergio Martinez via decision. He has total rights to an immediate re-match and will choose whether or not to exercise that option in the coming weeks. So, in the meantime, Kelly will relax and assess his weight situation and his plans.

The weigh-in was a loud affair with about 500 in attendance. Challenger Sergio Martinez weighed 159.5 pounds and the Champion Kelly Pavlik also weighed 159.5 pounds. Martinez seemed jovial and played along with the "Kelly, Kelly, Kelly!" chants. It was an affair of loudness and stare downs and words and gestures of dominance, but tomorrow there is no pretense. There is a fight.

Martinez's confidence is soaring high after a controversial loss that many, including Pavlik, believe he won 115-113 against Paul Wiliams. Sergio Martinez is one of the craftiest fighters in the game and he utilizes the south paw stance with movement and quickness that has foiled many of the top fighters from welterweight to Middleweight. On March 13 he and Pavlik met in Dallas Texas to announce their clash on April 17 in Atlantic City. Martinez showed no reservation in declaring that he will Knock Out Kelly Pavlik. Perhaps Martinez is counting on Pavlik still suffering the effects of a near fatal staph infection that plagued him for much of 2009. Or perhaps Martinez honestly believes he can beat Kelly Pavlik at his best. In either case, the talk ends on April 17. They meet in Atlantic City as Kelly Pavlik will defend the Universally Recognized MiddleWeight Championship of the World against the BEST Middleweight contender on the Planet.

Pavlik, his trainer, Jack Loew, publicist, John D'Altorio Sr., and YSU's Tony Marr were presented certificates of recognition at an award ceremony hosted by the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Warren District. In April 2009, Pavlik, Loew and D'Altorio participated in the announcement meant to address drunk driving. Marr filmed and produced it free of charge.

After running his usual 6 minute mile pace in the Mill Creek Run, Pavlik stopped to take a photo with a couple of fans. Somehow his number ended up becoming a hat. In any case, Pavlik takes the opportunity to participate in similar types of events whether for charity or simply to support city activities. It's his way of combining training while enjoying events in the city he loves.

Sergio Martinez reigns as junior Middleweight Champion of the World. He's one of the craftiest boxers in the game. He has 44 wins 2 draws & 2 losses. One loss to Paul Williams in a December bout that many people believe that Martinez won 115-113. It was a one of the best Fights of 2009 where both fighters picked themselves up off the canvas. And the other loss is to Antonio Margarito 10 years ago. After Margarito's suspension last year for the use of plaster of paris in his hand wraps, any and all of his victories are in question. Also on Martinez's resume is a draw to the highly touted Kermit Cintron in a fight in which Cintron was counted out following a devastating punch that was oddly perceived as a headbutt by officials allowing him to continue on to a draw in a fight that many had Martinez winning by 3 or 4 rounds. In a nutshell, Martinez is a veteran fighter with one of the strongest records and resumes in the game. Many boxing insiders believe he is THE best contender to challenge for the Universally Recognized MiddleWeight Title. Kelly Pavlik wouldn't have it any other way. Pavlik has taken care of the WBC and WBO manadatories and now it's time for him to fight a big name. Martinez is exactly that.

Kelly Pavlik landed big shots on Miguel Espino early in the first round but Espino stood tough and made the most of his first World Title shot by engaging in a 5 round war. Most boxing analysts would have strongly advised against a strategy as such by Espino but all the crowd in attendance looked on in amazement as he absorbed insurmountable punishment in order to land shots of his own. Eventually the toll was too much as Kelly Pavlik began to land pinpoint accurate uppercuts that sent Espino's head popping back and eventually crumbled him to the canvas. Espino got up from several knock downs and in round 5, his corner ended up throwing in the towel when he was helplessly pinned to the ropes on the receiving end of a Pavlik barrage. Kelly Pavlik came in at 160lbs while Miguel Espino came in at 159lbs. The official weigh-in took place at the Beeghly Center and it was officiated by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Afterwards, Kelly and his camp endulged in a hearty lunch at his new restaurant "Kelly Pavlik's 13th Round" in Campbell on the outskirts of Youngstown. The fight is Tmrw at the Beeghley Center at Youngstown State University. Tickets still available.

December 19th Defense Against Espino Is A GO! Williams December 5th Clash was cancelled, hand needed a little more time.

A stubborn and potentially fatal bout with a staph infection in his hand has been Kelly's toughest opponent to date. It persisted for most of 2009 and climaxed with an allergic reaction to antibiotics that took him close to death. In the process Kelly canceled an October clash with Paul Williams, rescheduled for December 5th and then asked Williams' people for a few more weeks. Williams decided to find another fight for December 5th. Now, Pavlik will defend his titles on December 19th at Youngstown State University's Beeghley Center against Miguel Espino.

Exactly 2 years as the Universally Recognized Middleweight Champion and what better way to celebrate than to announce the most exciting defense of his title. Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams announced their Middleweight Championship clash at the New York Giants training facility in New Jersey. Their fight will take place on December 5th at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Tickets go on Sale September 30th. It will air on regular HBO. Giants Running back, Brandon Jacobs, was on hand and he gave team jerseys to each of the two figthers with their names emblazoned on the back.

On hand were other sports stars and legends including Bernie Kosar, Josh Cribbs, Mo Williams & Anderson Varejao. The Red Carpet event was at the Barley House on West 6th in downtown Cleveland. Kelly was accompanied by his wife Samantha, his father Michael and a few friends.

Troy invited Kelly as a celebrity golfer to help raise money for the Cleveland Muny Football League for kids ages 8-15. State Farm was the Title sponsor for an event that brought the biggest names in Ohio and American sports to Signature of Solon Golf Course. More than 50 notable athletes and celebrities were on hand including Bernie Kosar, Archie Griffin, Eddie George, Brady Quinn, Jim Tressel, Chris Chambers and Ed Reed. The event started with a meet and greet dinner on Sunday night. 18 holes of golf on Monday were followed by a banquet. Afterwards, Kelly, Troy and several others met at the Barley House to celebrate a successful event with many great memories to boot. Kelly said, "This is a great event for people to come together and have fun and also to raise money for a worthy cause. When it comes to kids we need to do as much as possible to support them. On August 7 we're having a golf outing in Youngstown at Bedford Trails and I hope that we have even bigger numbers than last year. We're still accepting golfers and sponsors so I welcome everybody. Jack Loew & Kelly each received the award. The USA Amateur Boxing Lake Erie Association is the district that encompasses Cleveland, Youngstown, Akron and surrounding areas. The LEA has produced numerous amateur and professional champions, nationally and worldwide, including Harry Arroyo, Jeff Lampkin, Greg Richardson, Joey Maxim, Earnie Shavers, Nate Brooks, Raynell Williams and so many many more. Jack Loew has always produced excellent amateurs out of his Southside Boxing Club and has been the LEA team coach numerous times as the best boxers from the district go on to compete at national tournaments. The dinner and presentations were at Sterle's Slovenian Country House in Cleveland, Ohio. On hand were numerous former LEA stand outs including two of the most recent, Shawn Porter & Miguel Gonzalez.

March 15, 2009. Kelly and Jack In St. Patrick's Day Parade.

About a decade ago, Kelly and Jack participated in the Youngstown St. Patrick's Day Parade driving at the end of the line in a small car with a hand written sign that read "Kelly 'The Ghost' Pavlik, Middleweight Contender". They've been in the parade every year since, and last year held the honor of Grand Marshall. In 2000, Kelly launched his professional boxing career as a decorated amateur and rose from a prospect, to a contender, to the mandatory challenger, and Ultimately to the Universally Recognized World Middleweight Champion. Perhaps the people of Youngstown support Kelly and Jack because their accomplishments don't just speak about boxing but about setting goals and working tirelessly towards those goals, whether it's school, or work, or for the enrichment of the city. This Parade celebrates all the wonderful things about Youngstown, most notably, it's great commodity of community.

February 21, 2009. Pavlik TKO's Rubio. Successfully Defends the World Middleweight Title.

The biggest Youngstown event in 3 decades got an exclamation point of Saturday night -PAVLIK won huge! The rugged Marco Antonio Rubio trained in the mountains of Temoaya, Mexico at more than 9,000 feet above sea level and came to Youngstown with plenty of gas in the tank. Pavlik's full arsenal & high punch volume (over 700 in 9 rounds) was persistent and unrelenting. Rubio, the mandatory #1 WBC contender, was dismantled and stopped. He did not answer the bell for the 10th round.

There was only supposed to be one winner but all the contestants were very talented and the judges had to find a way to include as many of them as possible. Matt Wolfe will sing the Anthem before the Pavlik fight on Saturday. Alyssa DiBernardi will sing "God Bless America" to open festivities on the night of the fight. Mark Hanni will sing the National Anthem at the official weigh-in on Friday.

February 18, 2009. Rubio is in town. Media workouts.

Marco Antonio Rubio arrived in Youngstown and conducted a workout open to the media on Tuesday February 17. Rubio, the #1 WBC mandatory contender spent the duration of his training camp at the Municipal Gym in the mountains of Temoaya, Mexico at more than 9,000 feet above sea level. Pavlik's training camp has been a varied regiment based entirely in Youngstown. His trainer Jack Loew opened the NEW Southside Boxing Club to the Media earlier today.

Mexico's Marco Antonio Rubio will be coming to Youngstown to challenge the World Middleweight Champion in his back yard. Kelly's trainer, Jack Loew, has conducted a closed training camp for the entire duration. No newspaper photograhers, no television crew cameramen, no friends or well wishers. It's all business. (This photo is from last year). Kelly Pavlik will defend the linear World Middleweight Championship on February 21st, 2009 at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown, Ohio. The Middleweight Title carries the sport's prestige. Previously held by numerous legends including "Sugar" Ray Leonard, "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler, Jake "The Raging Bull" LaMotta, "Sugar" Ray Robinson, and many of the great personalities in boxing history.

January 17, 2009. Autograph signing at Lake Erie Monsters game.

Kelly was invited as a special guest of the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Monsters season ticket holders were part of a special meet and greet in a conference room at the arena. Afterwards, Kelly signed autographs for an hour in the main atrium. Several television stations covered the Champ's appearance and he spoke to reporters about preparation for his February title defense. He got interviewed live during the first time out of the game. This special event came at the end of a full day of training. The following video is a stroll down the line of people waiting to meet the Champ.

About 5,500 tickets were sold in 30 minutes. Reporter Dave Skolnick of the Vindicator says more tickets were sold for the Pavlik Title defense than for any other event in the Chevrolet Centre’s three-plus-year history. Many braved the cold & snow and got their tickets from the box office but thousands of others swamped ticketmaster.com and called direct. With a capacity of 7,000 there are a couple hundred tickets in the $200, $300 and $500 range left but the $50 and $100 range were gone within 30 minutes. The Chevrolet Centre is a stunning facility that seems almost as though it is more suitable for boxing than Las Vegas' MGM. It has a compact design, chic style and it's one of the most modern arenas in the entire State of Ohio. Pavlik fought at the Chevy Centre in 2006, winning with a knock out.

BuckCherry band members Stevie D. Dacanay, Josh Todd and their security chief Dan Abell joined Kelly Pavlik at SouthSide Boxing Club at 10 a.m. Todd is avid about boxing and trains daily. He's knowledgeable about the sport and admires Kelly's style in the ring. “I am a big fight fan and work out daily, so I cannot thank Kelly enough for taking the time out of his busy schedule to not only work out with us, but lend some valuable ring pointers as well. Team Pavlik is back home after a tough decision loss to Bernard Hopkins in a Lightheavyweight Fight. Middleweight King Kelly Pavlik didn't have his usual strength, snap or punch volume while Hopkins was at his absolute best. Hopkins' legendary status boasts a 20 year resume with his most significant wins coming in recent years. At 37 he was the first to KO and defeat Felix Trinidad. At 39 he was the first to KO Oscar De La Hoya. At 41 he was the first to convincingly defeat Lightheavyweight Champ Antonio Tarver. At 42 he was the first to convincingly defeat Ronald "Winky" Wright. Earlier in his career he was the first to defeat Glen Johnson and the first to KO or convincingly defeat numerous #1 contenders during his 10 year reign as Middleweight King. One of Hopkins' current trainers, John David Jackson, was a former KO victim. Hopkins' has never been KO'ed and has only lost 2 matches by unanimous decision in his 20 year career (Against Roy Jones and against Jermain Taylor). Hopkins is an enigma because his strategy has evolved with age and has earned him his greatest victories in recent years. He is a rarity because he's an active boxer and consensus future Hall of Famer. Against Hopkins Team Pavlik knew they had to be at the top of their game. An injured elbow coupled with anti-biotics to treat a case of bronchitis may have diminished Pavlik's strengths. His usual energy, punch volume and snap were non-existent from round one. What appears to have been an off night for Pavlik was a night that Hopkins looked his best. It is noteworthy to mention that Jermain Taylor beat Bernard Hopkins twice and Kelly Pavlik beat Jermain Taylor twice.

After the weigh-in, Pavlik and Hopkins meet at center stage for the final face to face photo opportunity. Hopkins decides to push his face into Pavliks' face. Pavlik pushes back. Hopkins retreats his physical contact and quickly turns to trash talking with a scold on his face. Pavlik responds in kind, perhaps moreso. What's being said isn't known for sure but what is obvious is that tempers are flaring. Saturday night: a legend who has elevated himself as one of the sport's superstars over the last 2 decades versus an undefeated hometown hero who's only 26 years old but has been boxing for 17 years. Pavlik squares off against Hopkins in an eagerly-awaited non-title bout at 170lbs in Atlantic City. Consensus future Hall of Famer Hopkins has never been stopped in his career. World Middleweight Champion Pavlik is Undefeated with almost 90% of his matches ending in KO. Hopkins' trainer Nazim Richardson says Pavlik is in for a tough night. Richardson said, "I don't know their game plan, but at the start, Kelly is going to realize he's in there with a legitimate fighter."

Thousands of runners gathered in Youngstown today for the 34th annual Youngstown Peace Race. The course took runners from the South Side, through Mill Creek Park, and ended in Downtown Youngstown. We are told more than 12-hundred people participated in todays event, one of those was boxing's middleweight champion of the world, Kelly Pavlik, whose just days away from his next fight.

Youngstown is known for producing great collegiate and professional athletes but they end up living in the adopted cities for which they play. As a boxer, Kelly picks the place he trains and lives and it's the same place where he grew up: Youngstown. Many boxers prefer training camps in the Pennsylvania mountains, Miami or Las Vegas, But Pavlik, and his trainer Jack Loew, function best when they are at home. Through the years Kelly has diversified his training regiment to include a variety of stops in any given week. Rocky Taumoepeau of Rocky's Gym, has been working with Kelly on strength and conditioning since Kelly's amateur days in the 90's. Rocky's Gym Website. Kelly joined his friends from the US Armed Forces at the Canfield Fair. Fair attendees had the opportunity to say hello to men and women of our US Armed Forces. Kelly accepts an Appreciation Award from Sgt. 1st Class Mark Hutton of the Army National Guard in recognition of Pavlik's support of the military. Kelly and his parents, Mike and Debbie Pavlik, pose with members of the 583rd Law and Order Detachment and the 838th Military Police Company, both based out of Austintown. Kelly was invited to officially open the 162^nd Annual Canfield Fair. He made some opening comments and cut the ribbon commencing one of the biggest fairs in the country. Kelly’s parents took him to the Canfield Fair yearly for his whole life. This year he was there with them and also his wife and daughter.

August 27th, 2008. Hopkins in Youngstown for Press Conference.

Kelly’s next opponent, Bernard Hopkins visited Youngstown with representatives from Golden Boy Promotions and HBO Pay-Per-View. Kelly’s Promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc. was on hand as were Kelly’s co-managers Cameron Dunkin and Michael Pavlik Senior. Hard hats were given to fans in attendance in with the theme as a blue collar battle between a Philly fighter and a Youngstown fighter. Although the press conference can best be described as polite and respectful the fighters and their teams took the opportunity to establish their intent. Kelly Pavlik said, “I love fighting the best fighters in the world. He’s a legendary fighter and for me to go in there and not only beat him but do it convincingly… that would probably be the biggest accomplishment.” The 43 year old Hopkins was a former Undisputed Middleweight Champion and Light-heavyweight Champion. Jack Loew said, “[Bernard Hopkins] is one of the greatest middleweights, one of the greatest fighters of all times.”

Kelly met with the Scrapper's Manager, former Indians 3rd baseman Travis Fryman. He also met with the team. Wearing a Scrappers jersey with "The Ghost" printed on the back, he played catch on the field before the game.

Over 1,000 people packed into Cene Field bleachers to watch Team Media face off against Team Pavlik in a charity softball game. Before the game started Dana Balash did a live interview with Kelly Pavlik and members of Team Media. One member of Team Media got a pie in the face live on television as Kelly’s father Mike snuck up on Vindicator reporter Joe Scalzo.

The game provided some thrills for the audience as Kelly went 3 for 4 on the day. Although Team Media had more runs after 9 innnings, Team Pavlik was able to win the home run derby courtesy of Kelly’s cornerman, Youngstown Police officer Mike Cox. Over $5,000 was raised for the local United Way.

The Ring Magazine was establish in 1922 and the slogan on the website says “The Bible of Boxing”. Having several owners and editors throughout the years it has been a stalwart publication of the world of boxing. The Ring magazine has a ratings panel consisting of 33 journalists from as many publications and boxing news websites. The ratings panel recognizes the King of each division. Kelly Pavlik is universally recognized as the King of the Middleweight Division, subsequently he also gets that recognition from Ring Magazine. He's been on the cover of their monthly publication 4 times in the last year, as well as the cover of their 2008 Almanac.

July 25, 2008. Special Guest at Foo Fighters Concert

Dave Grohl and Chris Shiflett invited Kelly and Samantha as special guests of the band when they played a packed house at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland Ohio. Spontaneously invited on stage Kelly got to do a guitar solo (with assistance from Chris Shiflet). Speaking to the crowd for a few minutes Kelly gave due praise to the one of the best bands in the world. The stalwart chant of O-H-I-O followed. The Foo Fighters are fans of Kelly’s fighting style and Kelly is a huge fan of their music and performances.

Hosted by Justin Timberlake, the program took place on July 16 and aired on ESPN July 20^th. Kelly and Samantha had the opportunity to catch up with several Ohio athletes including current NFL, and former Ohio State linebacker, A.J. Hawk. Kelly Pavlik honors his friend at a banquet in his memory. Johnny Swanson's family spoke in reflection about Johnny's life as a son and father. They also spoke about the importance of amateur boxing in his life. Kelly's trainer Jack Loew spoke about Johnny's sincerity, work ethic and passion. The event was also a fund raiser to support the boxing pursuits of other young boys and girls of the Southside Boxing Club so that they can reach and achieve as Johnny did.

Kelly was introduced to Dante Delsignore in early 2007. Dante had recently been diagnosed with cancer and was in the midst of regular treatments. Kelly admired Dante's courage and fortitude in his battle against cancer. In the following months they stayed in close contact and drew strength from one another.

Kelly became the first person to Knock Out Gary Lockett. Kelly has knocked out every single opponent he has faced since 2004. 6 of his last 7 opponents had never been knocked out. Kelly knocked out all of them.

The American Cancer Society asked Kelly to be the national spokesman for the launch of a cross country bus tour aiming to make the fight against cancer a major issue during the election season. It kicked-off in Cleveland Ohio and Kelly was on hand to share his sentiments about the importance of people coming together to advance the cause of cancer research and support for the millions of Americans that confront the illness. The cause is especially close to home for Kelly because his mother is a cancer survivor. He and all the people in attendance signed the bus that will be traveling across the country.

On September 29, 2007, Kelly KO'ed the undefeated Champion Jermain Taylor for the title and beat him in the re-match February 16, 2008. In fall 2007 Kelly was a special guest of Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes, Travis Hafner and the Indians, Coach Romeo Crennel and the Browns, and LeBron James and the Cavs -all documented in the "Photos" section. Kelly has been involved with charities since his amateur days but once he won the title he was able to raise significant funds for numerous charities.

May 19, 2007. Kelly defeats Edison Miranda and becomes the Universally Recognized #1 Contender

"The Right To Fight" (for the championship).
Kelly fought Edison Miranda on the undercard of Champion Jermain Taylor's defense against Corey Spinks on May 19, 2007. Kelly was ranked #1 WBC while Miranda was ranked #1 WBO. At May 18 pre-fight press conference Pavlik took the podium stating his goals and then sat down. After Pavlik, Edison Miranda took the podium and spent most of his time ridiculing the champion Taylor, almost ignoring the threat Pavlik posed. Then Corey Spinks' promoter, Don King, took the podium and simply looked back at Miranda and said, "You best worry about that white boy over there", pointing to the Knock Out Phenom Pavlik.
After King, Taylor took the podium and erupted in a tirade calling out Miranda and Pavlik. The press conference had turned into an array of tempers and threats.
The following night Pavlik crushed Miranda with an exciting 7th round KO. Pavlik's KO made ESPN's top 10 plays of the day.

"Those are the two (Bernard Hopkins and Sergio Martinez). He struggles with movement. You know, the guys who try to fight him right inside his danger zone, his tunnel, where he can land the one-two, or if you push on him and you're not big enough to handle (his size), his body shots or his uppercuts. You can't stand in front of the guy, he's a good puncher, he's got great range and if he hit you at full distance he's gonna hurt you. He's not a 'One Punch Monster Knock Out Guy' but if he hits you once and you get stunned and then he catches you again -he's gonna put you out. I think, like you said, you gotta give him tricks, you gotta give him angles, you gotta be in great shape to move around the ring and keep him off balance and fight him when you want to fight him, and don't let him fight when he wants to fight. It's gotta be a smart game plan, I mean, I'm not gonna say a pretty game plan. Hopkins made it look pretty, made it look easy. And Martinez used a little athleticism, a little more speed. He (Martinez) had a great start and then started punching a little too hard and Pavlik was timing him coming in. Then it looked like Pavlik was coming on strong and then Martinez kind of re-adjusted came back behind some punches and took a little off his (Pavlik's) steam. Matinez got a little closer with his shots and put 3-4-5-6 behind them. Those started to hit Pavlik and started to cut him up and then he couldn't deal with that. So, it's gonna be angles. It's gonna be movement. And he's gonna have to be in great shape. I'm gonna give him the movement but I'm also not gonna run all night. I feel like I'm big enough. This is a much bigger weight class that he's coming up to. We've seen him bully guys at 160, smaller guys. He's gonna be fighting a guy who is 185 pounds in the ring, not 170. So it's gonna be a lot different for him. If I feel comfortable on the inside then I'll fight on the inside, but if it's really easy on the outside, then by all means, I'll make it easy."

It was a night to remember for the Youngstown faithful. Former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World, James "Buster" Douglas, was on hand to support his fellow Buckeye World Champion, Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik as he successfully defended his title against WBC #3 contender, Miguel Espino.
